An 80's inspired coming of age comedy with a little more hiding under it's sleeves.
Netflix's I Am Not Okay with This was a surprise to say the least. It was really funny. You have teens dealing with their problems in hilarious and very relatable ways. At times the series got very dark, but overall the story had a very warm and comforting feel to it.
The series follows Sydney, a teenage girl navigating the trials and tribulations of high school while dealing with the complexities of her family, her budding sexuality, and mysterious superpowers just beginning to awaken deep within her.
The story became enthralling. It felt like a thank you letter to the 80's. Feeling like a mix between Stranger Things and Carrie thrown into a coming of age teen comedy. And the more "supernatural" things were really impressive, but the best part of the series was without a doubt the characters.
Sydney brought to life beautifully by Sophia Lillis was such a complex character that carried most of the series. Learning about the character and just watching her live life was surprisingly engaging. Throw in the odd but amazing Stanley played again beautifully by Wyatt Oleff and your in for pure entertainment.
Without spoiling anything the series does get dark. There were some scenes that really surprised me, and I love that they pushed that boundary. It was also heartbreaking. These kids really go through some stuff.
This was a short and sweet comedy that almost felt like an indie. It was funny and heartbreaking with two great performances and some beautiful cinematography. The story was really good, and the characters were amazing. I Am Not Okay with This was a great coming of age comedy.
