Chernobyl hooked my attention within the first ten minutes. You can’t help but connect with the characters and their incredible inner and outer turmoil during this disaster. The mini-series follows several characters affected by the nuclear explosion, ranging from villains to heroes.

I can’t say I’ve seen many shows that are both educational and entertaining at the same time. HBO’s Chernobyl easily checks both boxes. There is just the right mix of historical and scientific information intertwined with emotional personal stories. The show primarily focuses on the struggle between scientists and politicians as they both try to navigate the next move for the people of the Soviet Union. I found myself constantly asking myself “What would I do?” which makes this an easy show to discuss with others.

The Soviet government went to great and dangerous lengths to shield the severity of the disaster from the rest of the world. There is a constant power struggle between the truth and the information sent to the masses.

I finished the show drained and devastated for the live slost and devastating effects of the explosion. In typical HBO fashion, there is deep character development, drama at every turn, and an artistic portrayal of a dark time in history.
